Bird numbers up in garden survey

The Gisborne Herald interviewed Dr Angela Brandt, Manaaki Whenua researcher and ecologist, following the release of the 2021 New Zealand Garden Bird Survey report.

Results from a national bird survey show a positive trend for native birds like kererū, unlike introduced species such as starlings, which have shown a decline over the years.

“What’s exciting about having so many years of surveys now is that we can see how trends are changing over time,” she said.

Dr Brandt said the survey’s data showed positive signals for four native species such as tūī (kōkō), silvereye (tauhou), pīwakawaka (fantail) and the kererū, which showed a 102 percent and 57 percent increase over 10 years and five years respectively).
